Question:
For anyone that knows stuff about computers/laptops: this good choice?
http://www.circuitcity.com/rpsm/oid/...oductDetail.do
I'm trying to find a nice all-around laptop for school (not gonna do desktop again, gonna need to be moving this around more) and this seemed to have best specs for the price. Only thing that's really "worse" is AMD vs. Intel, but I really don't know the difference.
Plus, I can pay 30 bucks and get a mouse, lock, and printer too.
Damn. I'm still amazed at how fast the Misc goes now. Almost on page three in a matter of minutes... if that.
for that price I'd rather get a dell XPS 1210
AMD is just as good as INTEL, some would argue that they're better.
Its OK, I'd personally prefer a Core 2 Duo. Intel has better tech when it comes to mobile technology. And they have the new Santa Rosa out too which basically rapes everything AMD has times 2.
Intel mobile Core 2 Duo's have better battery life, are faster, and run much cooler vs. AMD.
I do like the 2gigs of memory and nice hard drive.
Shop around a little more before you make your final decision though. Check out lenovo and acer's. The latter being a cheap but quality alternative to the big brands.
Just stay away from toshiba.
If you like it, go for it. As long as it accomplishes what you need.
www.newegg.com and www.powernotebooks.com are great sites.
AMD is just as good as INTEL, some would argue that they're better. I'm a huge AMD fan. I find they're better at being overclocked and minutely reducing any sort of system setbacks.
To the OP - computer is worth the price. Get it if you want.
The 1210 XPS Dell is smaller and just as good, if not better. IMO.
my 3 cents.
i have the Dell Inspiron E1705 17" Widescreen...and i love everything about it....Although its kinda heavy...and you may want to go with a 15" screen, that'll lighten it up alot...plus most dell laptops are reliable, easy to setup and use...along with some really good customer service...im shure the other ones are ok, but i think you get more computer for your money with dell...imo.
He said this was for school, therefore battery power is important to him, 99% of the opinions above is essentially useless.
I suggest an Asus laptop. Solid build, decent power, long battery life(6-8 hours).
Thanks for all the help. Never heard of Asus, I'll for 'em.
Also, don't really want a Dell... overpriced. The Inspiron 1520/21 (and XPS being even more expensive at same size) don't even have the same stuff this HP has, yet cost far more. For basically the exact same Dell, Inspiron 1521, I get Intel instead of AMD and it's nearly 1,100 rather than 750-800 like this one is. Also, it has a 9 cell, but I can just get this HP for the extra cost and carry around an extra battery for still cheaper.
And although I be moving it around and what not, I've used my Dad's 15 inch laptop and I don't mind that size at all... wouldn't want anything smaller really.
And curious why no Toshiba? And what about Gateway?
I'm gonna look at Asus now.
Btw, what I need/want:
-Vista Premium (gives me a TV, which I don't feel like buying for school, already have the tuner from my desktop at home... came with it).
-2 Gigs, from what I heard you need this to run Vista efficiently.
-120+ GB, although 160+ is nice.
-15 inch screen
-VGA port (for extra monitor)
-6 hours of battery life (although if the extra battery life is all the laptop has and it's more expensive than a cheaper one with worse battery life being the only disadvantage... can always buy a second battery)
That's it really. The more of everything past that the better. Would be cool to have the option to play games or watch movies and have it look nice, but not completely necessary.
Does this have that? Seems like it's relatively there. If there are better ones around the same price, I'd like to know though. Dell's from what I've seen aren't much better and are more expensive... so... no go on that.
I'm about to look for the Asus though and compare.
Any other help is appreciated. I'm not very computer savvy, so that's why I'm coming here (not that the misc is the best place to go, but I'm familiar with this board).
that's the EXACT same thing I just bought today.
^ dell coupons ftw!!!!!!!1
$300-350 off
Oh and will check Acer and Lenovo as well. And ty for those links.
that's the EXACT same thing I just bought today. Ha, how you like it? I know it's a bit soon... but any feedback you can give and maybe why you choose it over other laptops.
^ dell coupons ftw!!!!!!!1
$300-350 off  Where can I find these? It's be the only way I'd be a Dell since the upgraded 1521 is 1100... eff that for just a 9 cell battery extra basically. If I can manage to get 300-350 off though, it is a definite choice.
just google "dell coupons" and you'll find some in no time. That's what I did.
what the **** mine's half that good and i paid $1500
Wow AMD FTW!!

I think I'll go for the HP I posted above, considering the Dell's have the Intel and wanna go with AMD now.
Off to Circuit City I go tomorrow.
not to burst your bubble, but that so called cnet "review" is comparing AMD's k8 architecture dual cores (the architecture still currently used in AMD CPUs) to intels older netburst based dual cores. Which sucked.
There is a BIG BIG difference between Pentium D and Core 2 Duo.
Core 2 Duo rapes everything AMD has in the Desktop and Mobile sector. Ah okay, didn't realize that and that's good to know, so thank you very, very much for that. Might grab the Dell than...
And what is so bad about HP? If ya gonna knock it, at least back it up. I have no attachment to 'em so could care less one way or another, but would like to know.
Dell would be a fine choice. I usually see them being knocked around alot, while they are actually very good buys for the money. Reasonably sturdy, better then most customer support, and good bang/buck.
HP is good too. But I would put it slightly under manuf. such as Dell, Asus, Lenovo (T-series are EXCELLENT). Some of the older stuff(HP) did have a tendency to hold up poorly.
