Do Baseball pitchers really need 3-4 days to recover between games?
Question:

Do Baseball pitchers really need 3-4 days to recover between games?
I find its a lazy excuse. They could do it im sure. Maybe its just a way to have more pitchers in mlb. With todays supplements and 6 meals a day plan, pitchers can recover right after workout. Curt Schilling I believed did it i think against the Yankees, pitched 1 game, and following game again.. to close them out.
Its almost like saying Basketball players cant use their legs for an hour to jump and dunk 2 nights in a row... they need to recover.

Answer:

that's a really shitty comparison

Answer:

they are throwing 100 MPH for however many pitches (dont really watch baseball) but its higher than 50 im sure. Im pretty sure that would hurt your arm. Mine is hurt after 4 of my hardest throws and they arent even fast
horrible comparison u idiot

Answer:

The pitch count reaches 100 on a regular basis......at about 86 mph average..
Easy stuff:P

Answer:

well they could do what japan does and have them pitch all the time and burn out their arms by the time they are 30 or they can go well into their forties like roger clemens.
and closers can pitch everyday because they only pitch 1 or 2 innings and probably throw around 20 pitches.

Answer:

basketball players are always a lot worse on back to back games, and don't bring their best. If you don't bring your best when pitching to mlb players you're in trouble. throwing 100x90mph pitches would take more out of your arm then running for 35 minutes would take out of your legs.

Answer:

they dont need to but if they want an arm or a career than they do.

Answer:

lmao strong ignorance

Answer:

Depends on the amount of work they are doing. A relief pitcher can often go 3 days in a row, but usually less than 20 pitches a night.
Prior to the 70s, MLB teams used 4 pitcher rotations and had more complete games. The Dodgers had five great pitchers and started the five man rotation, other teams followed suit.
One factor is that many pitchers throw harder now, not better. It's tough for a guy who has good location to impress scouts, who are more interested in kids with 90+ fastballs, so more hard throwers are drafted and get the college scholarships. They tire more quickly than a softer thrower and throw more fastballs because they have less command over other pitches.

Answer:

oh man...
lets just say the rotator cuff and elbow are small muscles/tendons/ligaments that are drastically overworked, you are talking 150ish throws in a game including bullpen warm up and 4-7 warm up pitches each inning. Also uhh if you throw the next day you are talking 5mph+ drop on your fast ball, that is a huge difference when everybody is throwing 85-100 range consistently, you won't have that "pop". Sure you could go run and play a game, like all the other players do... 162 games a year... ughh this thread pisses me off, op you are a shit tard and guessing you are a "sports fan" due to your sig, but being one you obviously no JACK SHIT about them, esp training and competition.
Danny, very true... most scouts won't look at you unless you are over 90... I was borderline (mid to high 80s)... went to div-I college, then threw rotator cuff out, b/c guess what, oh yeahhh our coach pitched me and the other ace pretty much every other game... but, didn't really have much of a chance b/c I was right handed and not in the 90s so didn't even bother trying to come back at that point.

Answer:

Well, first, overhand throwing is an unnatural motion for the arm which puts a lot of stress on the elbow and its components. This is why there are so many arm injuries in baseball as well.
You are not just letting the muscles recover, but the tendons and ligaments as well that get the extra abuse from the throwing motion.

Answer:

Yes pitchers need at least 3-4 days after a complete 80+ pitch game.
Closing can be done about 3 days in a row tho. Some times more I on avg closed 5 games a week for Legion this year.

Answer:

dude you have NO idea what you're talking. just stfu op

Answer:

and closers can pitch everyday because they only pitch 1 or 2 innings and probably throw around 20 pitches. Unless you are a Cubs bullpen pitcher, then you can expect to throw about 50 pitches in one inning.

Answer:

I was a pitcher and really needed the rest, but never got it because my school was small and i had to play 3rd base in addition to pitching. making a throw from 3rd to 1st with a cold arm was one of the worst things i could have done. arm is hurting just thinking about it.
when rested i could play catch on a football field from endzone to endzone :)

You are not just letting the muscles recover, but the tendons and ligaments as well that get the extra abuse from the throwing motion. yeah many have this surgery i think its called tommy gun surgery, where they take a tendon out of the pitchers catching arm and put it in their throwing arm.
and many pitchers end up having shoulder problems and shoulder surgery is a bitch especially if its rotator cuff because your shoulder will never be the same again.

Answer:

100 pitches seems to be the magic number for most pitchers in the bigs. Mechanics have a lot do with the pitching and fatigue means poor mechanics which leads to injury.
