Question:
Building my Home Gym
Hi ppl, i have been lifting weights and playing basketball for several yrs now. Not that i have ever reached the goals i wanted too but i have managed to overtrain twice this yr and this time for good (5 months of bedrest is a good deal of time i guess)
So i consulted several physicians and they told me i should start swimming and training at least my upper body slowly, since muscle atrophy will inevitably develop apart from all the other hormonal damage caused by overtraining.
I was sceptical initially since i can still feel my legs dead heavy (can barely walk around the house actually) but my upper body feels and reacts better so i went to buy a bench and start my own home gym slowly.
I payed 280 euros for a bench by this company named Kettler, never heard of it before but i was told its very good and solid structure. As i started compiling the bench (it also includes a part for working out leg muscles like biceps and quads) i noticed that the bench which is supposed to withstand me weighing 85 kilos and my 1 rep max apprx 110kg is supported by a series of little 5cm screws, and actually the whole equipments strength and safety depends on the proper mandling of those screws and nuts!! And my question is how can ppl selling them equipment assure me that small screws like the ones im using can withhold as much as 1 ton of weight?
I was looking for something stronger and more liable, at least visionwise, i dont know how strong this bench may be in practise, but i pay real attention to safety after my latest serious health issues i wouldnt want to get more problems.
I would like your opinion on this kettler bench (if anyone has bought one or uses it for himself) and your thoughts about which benches are the best to buy regarding safety mostly and longivety.
Thanks, in advance, heres the link to look at the kettler bench i bought

You may wanna think FID bench and power rack. You'll out grow that bench quick.
How do you overtrain so much that you need 5 months bed rest? Please explain.

man, that's shit. I've been overtraining gently for all of my 4 years training so far, including a severe period last winter - I'm still ****ed from it, but I never needed full bed rest. If you've done it twice, you need to really learn this time and take it easy.
How do you overtrain so much that you need 5 months bed rest? Please explain. Well its easy. I did squats, endless plyometric exercises, cycling several kms uphills and downhills and played basketball several hours each day without periodization or proper bed time rest.
In the end before full blown overtraining had set in, for like a week or so i would feel extraordinary strength combined with nervousness which i thought was something normal !!. But instead it was the overreaching period. So i kept lifting and sprinting and what happened was a total autonomic nervous system imbalance. Very easy to get into this state if you saw my training rhythm. But results before overtraining were massive i would outsprint and outjump everyone in the court.
You think 5 months is a long resting period? I know ppl that missed 10 months of practicing sports and had to stay inside just to be able to walk after that. I know its sounds sad but it can happen :(

What do you mean you ve been overtraining gently? You have beend diagnosed as overtrained and didnt need bed rest? Not even 1-2 weeks?? How is this possible?
Have you surely reached overtraining or you just feel you are doing too much and heading there? If you feel you are doing to much cut back for like a week or so and go test your hormone levels, (testo and free testo), testo/cortisol ratio, glutamine/glutamate ratio and cpk, ldh as well as sgpt and sgot, have a general blood test and your morning heart rate and then restart training.
Initial symptoms of sympathetic overtraining(the one that sprinters and power weight lifters develop) may include:
decreased motivation for exercise
decreased maximum VO2 in shorter than expected periods of time
slight loss of libido
delayed muscle recovery/prolonged soreness
difficulty sleeping
easy tiredness
decreased or plateuad performance for some period of time
reduced toleration of weight loading
shaky hands or generalized inspecific tremors
and others that may or maynot be specific of this course
if you keep going then you are getting into the full blown state with numerous debilitating symptoms and an emerging need for prolonged bed rest to recover (4-12 weeks is usually needed but i know of people that needed 10 months)
debilitating fatigue
feeling of heavy sluggish and painfull or 'dead' legs
sickness
lethargy
changes in resting metabolic rate with accompanying change in appetite
headaches
insomnia(inability to fall asleep or waking up several times during night)
retrosternal burning
nausea
alteration in breathing patterns, typical increased breathing rate to slow down the sympathetic nervous system dominance
apathy
depression
increased resting blood pressure and heart rates
hypoglycemia
irritability and anger
feelings of deep tremor
sensitivity to light
loss of coordination
muscle weaknesses and possible muscular atrophy
continuous low back pain
feeling of tension
total loss of sexual desire
difficulty concentrating or processing large amount of information
increased susceptibility to infections and colds
and many many others
in general overtraining is a very serious condition it mimics in severity that of long lasting viral infections like EBV and needs complete and total bed rest, very good nutrition, different type of baths depending on which part of the nervous system is messed up and massages and a very healthy environment to recover.
Parasympathetic type of overtraining is less in severity and athletes that get into that state are usually marathon runners and long distance swimmers
By the way i changed my bench equipment today and got a better one i think :) same company stronger though, more solid structure. It can hold up to 300kg max (a 150kg bar + a 150kg person in weight)

Holy crap.
I might want to rethink my split training. I do heavy weights in the a.m., cardio in the p.m., on a 5 day cycle with 1 day of rest.
