baked tostitos (and other corn products) .. good complex carbs?
Question:

baked tostitos (and other corn products) .. good complex carbs?
I picked up a bag of baked tostitos today, have a look:
1oz
120 calories
30 from fat
3g fat
150mg sodium
22g carbs
2g fiber
2g protein
Ingredients: whole corn, vegetable oil, and salt.
This + the salsa is soooo good. I was thinking of just eating a can of tuna straight and this after for a complete meal.
I guess I'm wondering if corn is considered a good complex carb ... it's not listed as a sugar after all. I also eat grits in the morning which comes from corn as well.

Answer:

no one has an answer?

Answer:

i dont think corn products are complex carbs. it goes through your gut really fast. atleast if its anything like popcorn...
thats why you have dextrose (corn sugar) and all kinds of corn syrups...
I think its similar to eating white potatos, both very starchy.

Answer:

I don't have an answer for certain, but I really don't think you can even count them as a food group. On the other hand, I agree that they are freakin really good! ;) I would maybe think about some black beans or refried maybe. Then non-fat cheese...maybe avocado... damn I'm getting hungry!

Answer:

Well I know there's corn sugar products (like dextrose), but that's just part of the corn. The reason I'm asking is because dextrose, corn syrup, etc are actually listed as sugars, but the other part of corn is listed as a non-sugar carbohydrate.
Only problem with beans is ALL of the prepared ones are made in a sugary syrup and they give me gas. I already get enough of it from all the whey.

Answer:

come on pros .. there are 923483242384 threads on eggs and cottage cheese but no one knows if corn is a complex carb?

Answer:

A complex carbohydrate:
* Consists of a huge number of glucose (sugar) molecules stitched together in long chains.
* Is usually less processed than a simple carbohydrate.
* Tends to be digested more slowly, and thus is less likely to raise your blood sugar.
* Is often referred to as "starch" or "fiber". A starch is a complex carbohydrate held together by digestible stitches. Fiber is held together by indigestible stitches.
* Two examples of complex carbohydrates: corn, sugar cane.
