Question:
Is MMA getting to mainstream IRL?
I mean, ive been in wrestling all thourghout middleschool and highschool. And ive been in alot of fights (street fights and whatever) and i pretty much always win because i can take people down and defeat them on the ground. Im really confident in my wrestling skills and ive actaully added alot of BJJ moves from bjpenns website into my arsenal. No formal training, just from studying his videos..
Now reading these forums it looks like everyones training MMA. This mean im gonna start seeing people trained in MMA everywhere and gonna start getting my ass whooped??
Nope. My guess is that the majority of the population is too lazy to workout much less train in MMA. There will be more people training now as compared to a few years back, but all in all it probably isn' that significant. That's my two cents.
1. it is too
2. street fighting is stupid
3. the popularity growth in MMA is great, means the sport will stay around and entertain us more...
2. street fighting is stupid Agreed. I think most people who train to fight legitimately will want to avoid street fights. But there are always some bad apples.
Well, i dont start any fights and yea its stupid. But sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.
the moment i see someone talking about street fighting and mma in the same sentence i have zero respect for them. the "sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do" is called defending yourself or loved one, not street fighting.

Defending your self or loved one on the street = street fighting. I'm not gonna get into a semantics war, call it what you will.
90% of the people that say they train MMA are lieing, or they consider training MMA to be hitting their punching bag twice a week.
God I love the Internet. Imagine saying this out loud at work during a meeting. Ive had to listen to people tell me awesome stuff like this...So it happens.
But MMA getting mainstream is great, it brings more talent to the sport. I just hope because it is dominated by the UFC it doesn't turn into a WWE type of thing. I hate 'pro-wrestling'.

or they watch clips on the internet. But there has been a big rise in people training. There have been a least 1 new person a week at my MT gym, over the last 5 or 6 months. It's not MMA, but I would imagine that the trend is across the board.

90% of the people that say they train MMA are lieing, or they consider training MMA to be hitting their punching bag twice a week. Plus they watch Chuck Liddell fight, that's gotta count for something right?
90% of the people that say they train MMA are lieing, or they consider training MMA to be hitting their punching bag twice a week. yes
And also I get annoyed for example if your enjoying a boxing match and some preppy shit and his boys come around and say "this sucks, ill just take him down and its over" It is like they just discovered that? Annoying shits like that piss me off Sometimes I miss UFC before the Rise in popularity...I wish MMA came out in the early 80's before the internet maybe we wouldnt of had these internent tough guys walk around bragging they train jiujitsu or mma.
Why does everyone have to act macho? its stupid to be honest.
i've seen a guy at my gym recently who always lifts wearing tapout shorts or these bright orange mma evolution shorts or something like that. i remember him because he's probably 6"4 or 6"5, has a sloth like body and even a tim sylvia sort of beard LOL. i see MMA is attracting great people to the sport..
90% of the people that say they train MMA are lieing, or they consider training MMA to be hitting their punching bag twice a week. lol that's me, but I also do BJJ at a pretty hardcore academy
You mean like the op? lol no comment.

But how long do they stay? Good point. In the 10 months or so that I have been involved with Judo, we have had dozens of people show up for one or two sessions never to be heard from again. We also have the ones who show up once a month and wonder why they aren't progressing. I experienced the same thing at my boxing gym and at the Vale Tudo gym I trained at. Some people like the idea of it all, but don't like the actual work required to make it a reality.
I can't even go to the grocery store without seeing some dude wearing a 'Tapout' shirt. Put it this way, back when I started doing jiu-jitsu in 2003, my buddies and I would go to bars and tell people we were MMA fighters. It was a good for getting the ladies, as they'd be like "What's that....oohh that sounds dangerous....are you good at it?" Stuff like that.
I wouldn't even consider doing that anymore. It's become so mainstream and common-place that telling someone you're an MMA guy just makes you sound like a jack-ass. I went to a Braves game about a month ago and the dipsh!t in front of me must have mentioned 6 or 7 times during the games how he "fights MMA" and "kicks ass in the cage".
