Giving up gym membership for BJJ gym?
Question:

Giving up gym membership for BJJ gym?
Pretty much the story is me deciding between a judo school (which teaches half ground, half standing.. instructor has a bjj purple belt, nationally ranked in judo, and has won many submission grappling tournaments) or a bjj school (Matt Serra, enough said). The judo school is 75 a month for two classes/week and i would get another 2 free classes at Saint John's.
Serra's is 140 for 2 classes/week or 180 for unlimited.
Now, i would prefer Serra's but that means i have to give up my gym membership for the price since id get the unlimited one since it would be more worth it to me. I've been working out for the past 2 and a half years religiously and i just wanted to know what you guys think, or if anyone else has been in my same situation. I'm not looking to be a bodybuilder or anything though. Id rather have both memberships but i obviously cant. All i would have is a barbell with some weights at home.
Oh yeah, reason for even having an interest in grappling is i wrestled for a few years in highschool so i know i would like it.

Answer:

Hrm thats a tuff one. Ive taken time off from BJJ lately, Im weight training 5 days a week now. Its hard for me to go back to bjj (screwed up nose) but I will still be able to do both. As for youself choosing... If you can make it work, go w/ the judo guy and weight lift too, but If thats not a possibility, what do you like more?

Answer:

the serra school in east meadow?
oh and no i dont think its worth it at all...

Answer:

check out D'arce BJJ. It's 160 a month for unlimited and 140 for twice a week.
I hear serra's classes are packed and you have to wear name tags lol but he has a nice facility from what I've heard

Answer:

go with judo school and keep gym membership.

Answer:

The only real reason to join the bjj school at all is because of serra. But he is never going to be able to help you , He'll be busy with his own training , and youll be paying all that money just to learn from his students. You could go to a normal bjj school , or judo school in this case for much less and get the same thing. Definitely , there is no reason to join the bjj school , just so you can walk around saying you train a serras school. Chose smart , and incase you didnt know the smart choice is the judo school.

Answer:

In this situation.

Answer:

Yeah in August when I am home I thought about going to Serra's but thinking about it it would be packed because he is out there now, and very expensive for the same reason.
SteelFlex where do you live because a few people have given me the names of a few places I could send them to you if they are close. You could check those out instead.

Answer:

I respect Matt Serra for what he has accomplished and I'm sure he has a nice facility. But you have to ask yourself honestly, what serves your interests the best?
Yes, the BJJ school has Matt Serra's name on it. But, will Matt actually be training you? Most likely not. If his classes are packed, how much 1 on 1 time will you have to work on YOU specifically?
If you're at a good Judo dojo, with a reputable sensei, who also teaches BJJ, why change? If you get more one on one instruction where you are at, you have no reason to change. I know this is a class environment. But at the end of the day, your training is about YOU and YOUR $$$. Who or what is going to give you the biggest bang for the buck???

Answer:

I'd train at the cheaper school until you learn the basics and decide whether you want to keep training in BJJ. As you get better enlist in a better school. I'm cheap so thats what I'd do.

I'd train at the cheaper school until you learn the basics and decide whether you want to keep training in BJJ. As you get better enlist in a better school. I'm cheap so thats what I'd do. This is true. If you think Serra can teach you some more involved techniques, wait until you have more of the usual stuff down from a cheaper school to save money. Then maybe when the time is right you can go private with Serra or something like that.

Answer:

Ah yeah, i was thinking to just do the judo with weightlifting and wait till i have more money. The thing is, on Long Island.. (I live in Plainview).. all the BJJ gyms are going to be expensive. Matt Serra's place is average price. Whats teh website to the D'Arce school?

Answer:

my buddy goes to serra and loves it. I dont go there so i cant judge but what i can tell you is the his trainer ray longo has a school in garden city... if your looking for mma go to longo- his fighters teach most of the classes from what i hear. if i was to go to an serra school it would be longos b/c its mma not just bjj and i already have a strong bjj background.... but you will deff have to put in alot of time before they will let you fight... there are other schools all over the place and the prices are all about the same... rent on long island is super high these guys are just trying to make a living serra could prob charge more b/c of the name. soca, souza are other schools in the area that are pretty much the same price.. pm me if you want help finding a school.. what school is the judo one?? do they have anyone that fights?

Answer:

I'm not really interested in MMA, just grappling. The class is called combat judo. The website is www.combatjudo.us and its at the school Judo Sports Inc- judosports.org.
I know my choices is the judo place..
Serra, Soca, D'arce, and Kioto. I'm assuming all are in the same price range.
160-185/month is a bit too much for me plus if i rather continue working out.. i would hate to leave it.
I'd rather do Serra's than D'Arce since Serra's is alot closer and has more options schedule wise.

Answer:

just to let you guys know, matt's brother Nick, is just as good of a instructor as matt is...
remember for the next few months, Matt is going to be in vegas shooting TUF 6, so basically no chance of seeing him anytime soon.
i live 2 mins from his gym in East Meadow and purposedly drive past to check it out and its ALWAYS packed. but supposedly some of the best bjj fighters train there, including girls

Answer:

Does anyone know a cheaper BJJ school in Nassau / Suffolk County?

Answer:

The Serra school is average price for a bjj school. I checked out a class today and the classes didnt really seem that crowded at all. Any more opinions?
And its not a judo teacher teaching bjj, its judo.

Answer:

if I had to choose between the 2 id go for bjj.
why dont you save up for basic rack and weights to lift at home.
