(SMH is an Australian newspaper, one of the more respectable ones, with the newsfeed from AP).
And I strongly agree that as a mother, these things affect me a lot more than they used to. I can't just shrug it off as a sad tragedy now, because I think - what if that was MY boy?
thats how I feel too Naomi

[quote=TexasGirl;183076]Also if you have kept up with this news article. The killer was found to be a 23 year old South Korean student. He is not allowed to own a gun in the United States, it's illegal. So investigators are still trying to trace that gun to it's owner or to where he bought it. Then they can hold the person that owns/ sold the gun accountable for leaving it out or giving it to someone that is not allowed to have one. THAT is how we limit access to guns.
Actually he has been in the US since he was 12(?!!) and bought the guns legally from a gun shop and PAWN BROKER!!! Which to me is a problem in itself. In other words the BACKGROUND CHECKS do not always work. Maybe he was a goody two shoes BEFORE he had a REALLY bad day and decided to use his new toys.
TG-Did you know that most killings by guns in the United States is because someone stole the gun from a family member. Did you also know that in order to get a gun, in Texas at least, that they do a background check on you and you have to pass that before you can even get a gun?
AS ABOVE
TG-Not only that, as soon as they buy a gun, it goes on record that they bought a gun and where they did so.
Seriously who cares where they bought it after the fact! The fact is they were ABLE to buy it in the first placeand then kill himself with the gun.
TG-Not only that regardless if you think he was right or wrong Iraqi people are better off now in a democratic society than they ever have been!!!!
Who says? U seriously can not say that they are better off when u do not live there. U have made the same comment many times in your thread that we do not live in the US and ergo should not make un-informed comments.
Really it does seem that we are much better off with our gun laws here. I really feel sorry for the familys. As for the guns, maybe a stricter background check and a legitimate reason for wanting one(or two).
By the way speak for yourselves when you say dumb Aussies, I know where I would rather be
Answer:
I believe it was Alexa that mentioned that maybe Americans didn't feel as strongly about gun control as Australians do. If I lived in Australia I would think that, too.
I would think that most Americans are gun-toting and war-mongering. I would wonder why Americans supoprt the war and support the lax gun laws.
Sadly, as I grow older I realize that what Americans want is not what we get. 60% of our population wants us out of the war, we are still in.
Most of the people I talk to on a daily basis at work or around town in Colorado or even back in my dear old South are ready for more stringent gun control. It is the big corporations, the gun lobbyists, that control our governemtn and what happens, not our general public.
Otherwise, we would not be in the war still, and we would not have as many gun problems.
For the record, TG, we went to war with AFGHANISTAN over 9-11.the Iraq war was not connected to 9-11 at all. Don't just listen to the crap you hear from the politicians. Read the information yourself so you can be informed of what REALLY happens. (I come from a VERY conservative southern family and am no longer a republican due to the war and the fact that we are still in it)
Answer:
I feel sorry for the families that have suffered a loss. I do think there needs to be tighter restrictions on guns, however, I do not believe the 2nd amendment should be taken away and I still think people should be able to use them for hunting/sport. Whether my vote matters or not, I do vote and have voted, and when the time comes I will never vote to take away the 2nd amendment as it stands right now.
I have very different opinions then every single one of you so I'm just agreeing to disagree because no matter what I say, not one of you is going to agree with me so my argument is pointless.
Answer:
That is the great thing about having differing opinions. You can listen to what others have to say, learn, and you can still at the end of the day agree to disagree.
