Too much Technology
Question:

Yesterday hubby and I went to Erina Fair, I needed to go to a bank I normally don't go to and it's a huge shopping centre I had no idea where the bank was so I went to check out the directory while hubby went to Big W, well it's this fancy big touch screen thing. It said to touch the screen to start, so I touched the screen (about 5 times) nothing happened, so I tried the screen on the other side, still nothing so I gave up. When hubby had finished in Big W he said don't worry we'll go for a wander and find the bank, well we wandered for a while still no bank so we decided we'd give the screen a go together (hubby is a lot better with technology than me ) so we find another screen and there is a couple about our age using it, so I thought we'd watch 1st and see how they go. After about 10 minutes they found the info they needed, so hubby had a go, while he was using it I found an old fashioned pamphlet directory and found where the bank was, hubby was still trying to get to the screen that had banks on it.
So does technology really save us time? Not to mention sending us insane

Answer:

I hate those screens too.I tried them when they were first installed at a local shooping centre (didn't need to.it was the child in me I think) and while it worked just fine, I found it as confusing as the older you are here boards.
Within a week those screens were not wortking.saw so many grubby little darlings (all ages too) just playing with the screens. boink, boink.kids like anything that makes a noise.boink, boink.
That same centre used to have two info booths with real people who could say hang a left, down the ramp, two shops on your right.and so on.
Those were the days my friends,
We thought they'd never end.well they bloody well have.

Answer:

I actually don't mind them because they always work for me. They have them at the Hyperdome and at Airport One (DFO) and I found them pretty user friendly. Mind you Hyperdome still has two information booths anyway so they cater for the technophobes and the technophiles

Answer:

One of the big cemeteries near us has a touch screen, you just type in the persons name and up comes their plot number.

Oh wow! Now THAT would be useful!
Technology doesn't phase me and I find it very helpful I suppose it's like anything though, the more you use it the better it gets, and the more iron out the problems I love the speed and effeciency that technology allows, but I feel for the lack of the personal touch, the deskilling of labour and the loss of jobs.

Answer:

They have the same at Macquarie and with theres they just have the alphabet listed and so you list press on the letter of the store ie W for Williams the shoe store etc.
I normally just go to the information desk (it is outside Target at Erina, Mel for future reference) and they are always great.
I don't know why they have changed to these, I am used the list of shop names and then a grid that you follow (that is what they still have at Hornsby).

Answer:

I don't mind the touch screens in general, but the cityrail ticket machines that are touch screens, are actually slower than the older style ticket machines. It drives me mad . so much for technology saving time.
Oh and I agree, Erina Fair is HUGE.

That would be really handy, save people a lot of time.

Thanks for that Alexa now at least I will know where to go, but I imagine over time they will probably phase the desk people out too

I had to use the cityrail ticket machine for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I was actually able to do that I didn't notice if it was slow or not ( I think it was me that was a bit slow )
I have used the computer system in a really big bookshop up here and find it's really helpful and saves heaps of time too.
Hubby often reminds me how I argued with him telling him we don't need a computer, then more arguing when he wanted to connect the internet. These days I wouldn't be without either.

Answer:

See Mel, technology can be good can't it?
