Question:
When you were a kid what was the meal that your mum dished up that you hated the most? and what was your favourite meal that your mum cooked? and do you cook these meals yourself for your family?
My positively worst was we would have a roast one night and the next night mum would cut the cold meat and we would have it re heated in gravy with mashed spuds and broad beans, I have never ever had this meal again since I left home
my favourite was crumb sausages, cabbage, peas, carrots and mashed spuds with apple pie for dessert, I have never ever cooked that combination myself for my own family
i hated Pumpkin as a kid
loved all other meals especially mums baked dinners i loved all her home cooked deserts but i guess one of my Favs was her 'lemon meringue pies'
hell I'm going to miss mums cooking
I hated broad beans too Di.and always loved (still do) Mum's roast.
Must admit that I loved my Nan's cooking the best though.everything she cooked was a favorite
I'm just trying to remember some of mum's meals I didn't like.
It wasn't so much the complete meals I didn't like, but rather things like pumpkin and also parsnips, brussel sprouts and swede. Still don't like those two!
Mum used to be, and still is, a health fantatic, so we always had to have things like wholemeal bread , wheat biscuits We weren't allowed to have the nice white bread and the cream biscuits, no lollies etc. And one thing I loathed was porridge and yes, she made us eat it as well, every morning! I used to compare it to eating brains, (well, I was only a kid! ) and it made my stomach turn.
She had the right idea, as none of us get sick very often and are quite healthy, both when were growing up and also as adults.
Amazing how our tastes change from when we were kids. I now love pumpkin and brussel sprouts. Porridge, still not fussed about and rarely eat it.
I always made my kids taste things before allowing them to say they didn't like it. Then if they didn't like it, I wouldn't make them eat it.
Keep in mind that I am starting this post with a tale in another era.my Mother grew up with a Cook/Housekeeper running the house, her Mother believed that genteel girls didn't have a need to learn the basics of running a house, ergo my Mother never had to cook until she met my Father.
This showed and our staple dinners were steak or chops, grilled to within an inch of their lives and three vegetables, which, regardless of their original colour were served a uniform shade of grey.the water was pretty tho'.
We always had a roast meal after Church on Sunday.the best part was the roast potatoes. Sunday night was savoury mince on toast (mince meat stewed in water and flavoured with Vegemite).and the toast was good as long as there was plenty of butter on it.
I can honestly say that the only tasty thing I remember my Mother making was Butterfly cakes.my favourites.and I have never made them myself because they were her specialty for me.
Heather we had to have weetbix every morning still can't stand the smell of them and Sunday night we had this toasty pie thing that you actually put in the hot coals of the open lounge fire, mum used to ask us to pick our favourite filling the rest of the family would have like bacon ,egg, tomato , pineapple and me being the very odd one would always have raspberry jam
sunday for lunch was always Fried Scones cooked in dripping in the electric pan with lots of butter syrup, oh god i loved them
My mother was a fairly basic cook as far as main meals were concerned but she always loved to bake biscuits and cakes etc. Main meals were mostly meat and 3 vege and the traditional Sunday roast. There was really only one thing that I hated and that was a dish of lambs fry, bacon, tomatoes and mushrooms. I didn't mind the other ingredients, but I hated the lambs fry.yuck!!
I cook very differently from my mother as a whole but I like the old traditional meals like steak, mashed potatoes and veges every now and then.
My Mum was/is a great cook I loved all her meals except Shepards Pie. As we were often lean on money mince was cheap we had it at least once a week. Now I cook it for hubby but donteat it mysefl
curried snags, egg and bacon pie, tuna pie, chow mein, all the cakes and bickys. Dad always did the sunday roast. Best gravy maker ever.
I don't cook any of mums things for anyone but me, they don't like it.
