Family History (Long post)
Question:

I didn't know where to put this.mods can move it if they want.
I'm into family history at the moment and actually found something on the Net!
My mum's grandparents and mother are from Ireland so she has some Irish blood in her. Her dad's family sailed to NZ on a boat named Chile.
I learned I had a great-uncle who died in the second world war. I've done some searching and learned he's buried in Italy (mum's confirmed that it is him and there's even a pic of him!) He was a gunner for the New Zealand Artillery and died at only 25 years old. I also learned his parents names were John and Kathleen Miller so they are my great-grandparents. Oh, this is on my mum's side. My grandfather tried to enlist but was too young. He lied about his age but got caught out.
My father's family is from England. On my father's side, he had an uncle or some reletive who lost a limb. And his grandmother was a seamstress for the Queen! I don't know much about my dad's family at all.but he reckons he can trace family back to the Vikings!?
Its pretty exciting to learn this stuff.just in time for ANZAC day.
Sorry for the long post. What about you ladies? Have do you done the family history thing on the Internet?

Answer:

No but a cousin did, and actually wrote a book about it.
The most notable personage in my family, apart from me of course ,
was a great Grandmother (on the maternal side) who was a second cousin to Queen Victoria.so practice your curtsies Ladies for when we meet at Bribie.

Answer:

Hi Natasha
I have been doing family history for a few years now if you get really interested try to find a Local Family History Association they are a good place to show you how to get started.
Dont believe everything on the net there are some bogus entries which have been found usually to prove that entries are correct we buy Birth Marriage and Death certificates.
If you get in to it can be very interesting!

Answer:

I've never researched it really, but when I googled my sons full name I came across a famous Irish footballer (with the same name as DS) who happened to be my hubby's great uncle. When I mentioned it to hubby's cousin he told me they were also descendents of a Pope .
AS far as I know there's no one too interesting in my families history

Answer:

My grandma is really, really into genealogy and family histories and all that, but I've honestly just never been interested in it at all. Apparently there are several prominent Americans in my lineage, especially on my mom's side, but I'm still not interested lol.

Answer:

I have done a little bit of research on my dads side, but we have a fairly common surname which has made it kinda difficult!! My mums side however has been researched fairly extensively and we are just normal old people on that side. not even a convict amongst us The Australian War Memorial site is excellent for descendants war records though.

Answer:

We have heaps of info on our family history.
I find it very interesting, and atm researching the other side of my dad's family. Hehe thats the side no one has done yet, I will get it done before we have a family reunion on that side
My Aunt is doing my mum's side of the family, One side had been done back to the first ships to come to Australia they were convicts

Answer:

One of my mum's cousins has gone back as far as the 1700s.I don't know where she finds the time, inclination or patience. I do believe there are some convicts in there somewhere. Same with John's side of the family, his mum has gone way back and has adopted several convicts.

Answer:

yeah I'm like that Stormy i just could'nt be bothered but i admire people that can, i am very short of patience when it comes to that sort of stuff my head is'nt all that fast at working things out either so i just don't ever get started on things

Answer:

I actually have two family histories.one from my natural family and one from my adopted family. There's nothing exciting in my natural family history but one of my uncle's (that I knew growing up) has researched our family history extensively. He found that on my grandfather's side that one member of the family was transported to Australia for stealing a donkey and he even has a copy of the court papers apparently. One other member of the family was on either the first or second fleet and he wrote in a diary (must not have been a convict) and it's been passed down through the family.
On my Grandmother's side, our family is related to Edmund Barton, the first Prime Minister of Australia.
I find it facinating and love being able to read about it.
