Question:
Hi everyone,
This is probably going to be a long one so I apologise upfront.
I'm currently studying full-time and today I had another exam. I'd made up study notes on what I needed to go over and I was reading over these outside of class while waiting for the lecturer to turn up when one of the other students came over and asked to look at them. He then mentioned that he didn't realise that a big chunk of what I had written down was going to be on the exam, because he didn't have that handout and asked if he could borrow it for a while. As I already had that bit down pat, I tore off the page and let him have it and I thought he was just going to read over it before the exam started cause we had about 15 mins to wait.
He went into class before me and by the time I went in, I saw that he had copied out a lot of the information onto a small piece of paper. I did start to get a little suspicious but I thought that maybe he just wanted to read over it before the exam and then I didn't think anymore about it. But then the exam starts and a minute later I see him reach into his pocket and he pulled the bit of paper out and he slid it in between his exam paper. I looked over at him and he saw that I had seen him do it, and I gave him a dirty look but I didn't say anything to him cause I didn't want to get myself into trouble for talking during an exam. A few times he moved the bit of paper to another section of the exam paper and it was so obvious but the lecturer never spotted him doing it.
I already wasn't in the mood to do an exam and after that, I found it so hard to concentrate cause I was wresting with myself over what I should do about what I'd seen. About 10 mins later he got up and gave his paper into the lecturer and instead of leaving, he just stood about a metre from me as if he was waiting for me to finish. I finished soon after and I walked past him and gave my paper in and then he followed me out and it was obvious he wanted to speak to me but I got in first.
I told him that I had seen him cheat and how it was so unfair to the rest of the students who work hard and study and pass their exams fairly. He asked me to go downstairs with him to talk it over some more but I told him I wanted to stay where we were. While we were talking another student came out and asked what was wrong and I told her and she agreed with me that I should report it.
I don't like being a 'dobber' but I also don't like turning a blind eye to things like that (especially after he used my notes to do it), so I did ask him to come back in with me. He tried to sneak the piece of paper out of his pocket but I told him to leave it there and I made sure I kept an eye on him and then I told the lecturer what I'd seen. He didn't ask to see the piece of paper or ask the guy if it was true or not, but you could tell by his face that he was busted and he didn't deny it either.
I just read on the college website that if students are caught cheating then the lecturer has to prepare a report and attach it to the exam paper and it's referred to the Institute Director so I might be asked to talk to that person.who knows though.
There are so many students that muck around, don't come to class, don't prepare for exams and then whinge that they don't do well. What is also annoying is that the lecturer we have is really great and he even went over what was on the exam and made sure that we had all the handouts and I had even helped this guy to sort through his handouts. I told him he was missing one and to go to the lecturer and get it and he obviously hadn't bothered. I also went through his other handouts and marked off what he needed to study and obviously he didn't bother because he was finished really early and I heard the lecturer say, oh well, you can just re-sit it next week.
i think you did the right thing. I can not stand cheaters. I am always telling my kids you don't get anywhere by cheating on you homework. In fact it doesn't matter what it is cheating is for loosers.
Brissygal,
You did the right thing, yomamma is right, cheating is for loosers. At least you had the balls to stand up for what you believe to be the right thing.
Good on you for having the courage to carry through your convictions.
I think when you cheat at something .you are only cheating yourself.
You definitely did the right thing! It's not fair to those who work hard to study, instead of just cheating to get better grades. I hate it when people cheat Spend a little more time studying and paying attention in class and you wouldn't have to cheat anyway.
I'm glad you turned him in! Hopefully he will have learned his lesson. At my school if you get caught cheating you get an automatic F for that class and have to take it over.
That's great that you stood up and spoke your mind. A similar thing happened with an acquaintance in exams half way through our Nursing courses. She was blatantly cheating and I was disgusted with her but didn't need to say a thing, a couple of days later she resigned from classes, I'm pretty sure a lecturer busted her, or she was dobbed in! There's no place for cheaters, and they deserve to be brought undone!
I think that was most definitly the right thing to do!! It makes me so mad that I bust my ass in college and work so hard and struggle in doing so but yet, some people have the nerve to cheat their way through. At my university though, if you are caught cheating, you can be kicked out of the university even if you are cheating on something as simple as a homework assignment. More power to you for telling your professor!
Good on you.if you see someone cheating you need to report it. It's more common than you might think and it won't get them anywhere by letting it slide. All it will result in is them getting a qualification to do a job which they do not have the knowledge to do. Very frustrating for the staff who have to work with them and babysit them every step of the way!
Shit i hope no=one ever copied of me i only made it to almost finishing year 8 so they would'nt have gotten very far either
