Question:
What are your views on anti smacking, Don't know what your policies are in your country but ours is about to enforce the law within a fortnight that no child is to be smacked and even if a parent or anybody is over heard threatening to smack a child they will be arrested, your wont even be allowed to remove a child with force from a dangerous situation eg. If a child is heading for a busy road a you grab him with force that is abuse.
I am not for smacking and if you can discourage the child from bad behaviour with some alternative then I would opt for that, but really feel this is gone to far and would hate to be a parent bringing up young ones today
I can see that our children need protection from abusive parents, but feel this is targeting the wrong bracket
So you are supposed to let that child get hit by a bus and killed? Wouldn't that then go from abuse to negligent homicide?
Yes Stormy even the police here say it is going to be a nightmare that they will have to carry out the law but no they will be prosecuting good parents, I'm afraid if I had young kids today I would be bloody ignoring it even with the threat of arrest, they are taking a parent's right away to be responsible. and I can't see how this is going to stop child beatings, as the low lifes that do that are not going to stop and say shit I am breaking the law here
OH boy! And who will look after all the children while their parents are in jail for disciplining them?
They were going to do this in the West many years ago, but decided not to. I believe a good smack is warranted in certain circumstances. But I don't believe in spare the rod either.
yoyo.do you mean spare the rod and spoil the child? I think that's how I remember it going.my nanna would say that a lot but in saying that she never smacked us once.
She didn't have to.we loved nanna and would do anything for her but if we crossed the line, she would threaten us with it.
i smacked my kids, not often because they were well behaved i often hear of kids bad behaviour think OMG just give them a smack honestly i am sorry if i offend i certainly don't mean to but kids just get away with so much these days are given so much all the timewithout having to earn anything.

I gave Briar a wee tap on the hand today as she kept playing with the electric plug on the wall, I said no but the more I said no the more she did it, I guess Granny is going to Jail hope the have the internet

I just know that i will go to Jail too but if it means getting some respect getting better behaved Gkids then so be it, i have even smacked my Joshy once or twice, even tho i didnt want to he just would'nt listen to me
I think they tried to have similar laws here. because I remember a friend's daughter telling her mum that if her mum hit her she could phone the police and have her arrested. My friend turned and said. You need to be able to get to the phone first lol. a huge exaggeration of course.
I think the laws are stupid personally. the police will prosecute the good parents. and the bad ones will still find a way. also there is a huge difference between smacking and beating. I use other methods of punishment first. eg. time out. Loss of privledges etc. but I will smack my kids.

It's OK auDi, I to thought twice about posting as I thought I was opening myself up for attack here but we are all entitled to our own opinions, and I will stay open minded, This has been one of the bills they have been trying to pass in parliament here for years but its all over now, it has been voted in so I guess It just makes bringing up kids for young ones a WEE bit tougher yet again, another thing they want to make the children's school reports a private document so It is up to your child weather he or she wants to show the parent or not, Now this I wish was in my day would have saved me alot of smacking
