Question:
sick to my stomache
Hello all,
I am new here, but not new to weight training and working out. I have a question though, regarding my new diet and the way it is making me feel. A little background: I am 30 years old and for 10 years, I have had an eating disorder. When I got pregnant last year, I got help for the sake of my baby. I put on thirty pregnancy pounds and had a healthy 9 pounder. Well, since she was born, I have been boarder line relapsing. Two weeks ago, something inside snapped and I made a promise to myself and my daughter that I would not go down that road again. Here is my problem. I have sustained on 800 cals a day for so long (10 years with the exception of being pregnant), that I think that my body is freaking. Since I have started to increase my calories-now up to 1500 a day on very clean foods, I have had the most aweful gut ache. It is like gas pains/queasy feeling. I can't seem to get any relief. My diet consists of oatmeal, eggs, lean meats, nuts, veggies, fruit, cottage cheese, tuna and fish and a gallon of water daily. I let myself cheat occasionally, because 10 years without the pleasure of a few yummy things is a long time. I am just wondering if maybe it's the fiber that is making me super gassy/bloated or just the fact that I am eating more then I ever have.
Anyone have any experience, or suggestions?
Kat
That could very well be what's trigerring those feelings. Anytinme you increae cals in your diet for a breif time you'll get those tyes of feelings, even though Im on a bulk diet I t get thsoe from time to time. This is your digestive sytem trying to work to digest the food you are intaking which by the way all souds really good. How much fiber are you intaking and how often do you spread your meals out. Smaller portions throughout the day might help say 8-10 times. It might get annoying trying to eat 8-10 times a day but trust when I say 8 meals of 190 cals a meal is a lot easier on your system than 3 meals of 500 cals each.
You can also look into some digestive enzymes in the online store here that provide your digestive system with extra enzymes to help promote a speedier and smoother breakdown in the nutrients of the foods you're eating. Best of luck to you!
Thanks so much Extreme. Well, as far as the fiber, I don't know exactly how much, but I am now eating multi-grain bread and oatmeal which I haven't really had in years. I have both a few times a day. I currently eat every few hours. For example:
9:00am -cup oatmeal, fruit, skim milk
11:00am can tuna, whole wheat bread
1:00pm 1/2 cottage cheese, apple
3:00 chicken or turkey
....and so on
this pretty much goes on for 24 hours (I have a baby, so I eat at night when I feed her too).
I think you are right, my digestive system is in overdrive after being stalled for a long time. I used to eat once a day-around 800 cals, so hopefully this adjustment will fix things...
Again, thanks for the reply!

You might also be eating a food you are allergic to or have a food sensitivity to. Try eliminating various items and see if you get relief.
You might also be eating a food you are allergic to or have a food sensitivity to. Try eliminating various items and see if you get relief. It doesn't seem like a food allergy, it seems like a natural reaction to the calorie increase, especially when combined with an eating disorder. I was inpatient a couple years ago for anorexia (and about to go again, for bingeing), and let me tell you, it was the most gassy, bloated, mess you've ever seen. It was pretty much normal to expect someone to fart about once every few minutes, even the girls who had been there and been off starvation diets for a month. I promise, it goes away after a little bit, for now you kind of just have to suck it up. Because of your history, I would STRONGLY advise against eliminating any foods, or categorizing them into good/ bad/ etc. For the time being, you need to focus on getting the calories you know you need, for you and your beautiful baby, gassy/ queasy or not. Good luck and have a happy recovery!
p.s. Maalox works wonders for the bloating and queasyness, and beano might help with the gas.
Thank you so much you guys, all of the input is so needed. I don't ever recall having any sort of food allergy (although I know that you can devolp them immediatly), it really feels like my tummy/lower ribcage is filled with air. Lots of pressure. I am going to try the maalox, I even thought about that Beano stuff. I can handle it, it isn't painful enough to make me stop getting all of the calories, it's just uncomfortable. Hopefully it will clear up with time as my body adjust. ;)
Since you have an eating disorder, you need to be taking Enzymes before and after all meals. The reason for the bloating/gassy issues is b/c your intestines can not digest the food. Are you drinking a lot of fluid with your meals? You may want to drink after you eat your food. By drinking liquids with your meals, it messes up the digestion process.
Also, I would also start taking a probotic.
If you think it's the foods you are consuming make a log, and when you start feeling these symptoms, refer back to your log.
