Question:
Mass or class?
Hi all, Ive been reading these forums for a while now and just recently been compelled to post a question. After watching Toney Freemans olympia interview I cant help but agree whole heartedly that hes right about the majority of the pros needing to fine tune and refine. It seems that everyone wants to improve in the sport and sadly improving always means adding more mass, year after year they come in heavier and heavier but less and less aesthetically pleasing. Do you guys feel the sport will ever move in more of a early 90s direction where everyone was huge yet still looked good and healthy? Or do you think we will end up with pros that are 5'8 350Ibs. and totally nasty to look at?
Mass will always be the name of the game at the top. Sure there maybe some tinkering around the edges, IFBB dictum to penalise guts for example which has been applied without any consistentency. But you will never see regression as far as size goes.
I wonder though, considering how stretched these guys are these days with multitude of drugs, calories, supps, intestines bursting at the seams, craniums and brows developing etc etc much more mass can be packed on a human frame. Those that try too hard and dont have the genes suffer afflictions such as Palumboism - aka Kovacs.
But then again science is always evolving and breakthroughs in sports drugs may take physiques to another level again. How internal organs will cope is another thing, pros today are blowing wind walking to get the paper, unlike 70's or even 80's - I remember Gaspari used to jog at good pace as contest prep. Can you imagine Ron or Jay doing laps round the block?
That is exactly what im getting at. The guys fom the past looked good enough to where it was somthing one would aspire to look like because they looked big ripped and over all HEALTHY! These days I cant look at one pro I would want to emulate my body after. Sadly I feel that the progression of the sport is ultimately going to be at the cost of our current and future pros health.
its weird because everything in life today is about more and more.. boxing and wrestling have been replaced with cage fighting. people want to see others going to the extreme.. but this trend doesnt seem to work in body-building.
mass WITH class..
but I dont think the sport is gonna get like it used to be..there is just gonna be more and more mass monsters and its gonna just keep getting worse and worse..
but then again what do I know? lol
olympia.. mass with class - basically mass is priority.
arnold classic... class with mass - conditioning is priority.

90's bodybuilders healthy?? LMAO. That Healthy and 90's body-building shouldn't be added in the same sentence. More like 60's.... Maybe!
body-building the SPORT is just not a healthy endeavor. Generally, sports arent healthy endeavors. body-building the lifestyle on the other hand, Very healthy for Mind, Body, and spirit. People aren't doing this for their health. I think they are all aware of this. This is why guys like Richard Jones make statements like "not willing to comprimise my health" because it is an excepted and known fact that one must compromise his health in order to win. The object of sports is to be competitive First and Foremost, and then WIN through the competitive spirit. LOL @ the goofy guys who make threads about Ronnie Coleman not eating Veggies or the comments about his health and other bodybuilders health. NEWSFLASH, @ ANYPOINT, body-building THE SPORT is NOT HEALTHY in ANY ERA. I'm thinking too many of us confuse the two. body-building THE SPORT, body-building THE LIFESTYLE. If I'm wrong, someone please give me the "health benefits" of 500lb squats for reps. Or Post workout Exogenous Insulin shots, or Etc. I think we get the point. Now, will body-building go back to physiques of Yore. I doubt it very seriously. Will they get "bigger" Not by much IMO. Until we see Gene doping that changes bones, Heart, and Ligaments. The supportive structures of our human bodies IMO won't support much more growth and if so we'd be riding around in wheelchairs and ONLY good for Posing on Stage. Something to Ponder.
The "new" guys like Dennis Wolf, Phil Heath, Kai Greene, Evan Centopani, and the fact that toney freeman placed 3rd ahead of ruhl and big names means that the athletes know what they have to do, and that it will change for the better.
I luv me sum MASS bodybuilders, but if its like a block of cement..no thanx...need sum CLASS in there 4sure!
mass WITH class.. Ditto!

Agreed, not to mention the europa show is having a under 210lbs class so maybe if it is a success the other show promoters will start having a under 210lbs class at the other pro shows and maybe some guys knowing that can't compete with the bigger guys without destroying their physique many will cut down and come in with better lines and conditioning for the 210lb class.
