5X5 Workout
Question:

5X5 Workout
I am curious if anyone has utilized the 5X5 workout program? If you have, was it successful for you?
I was utilizing a six day a week program and I really showed results from it, but the guy that I lift with wanted to try this workout and I just wondered if anyone has utilized it before. We are in the first week of it and I am very skeptical of it.

Answer:

5 x 5
I used the program and I gained size and strength. If you look at my profile pictures the pictures in the yellow tank top were when I was doing the 5x5 training program. I highly recommend it.

Answer:

I've tried it and it worked for me too. I find that every plan has helped. As long as you push hard and force yourself to progress in weight or reps.

Answer:

It's very intriguing. I am considering trying it for a time when I start getting stale in my current routine.
Please keep us posted on how it is working for you.

Answer:

Hey Billy,
There are several variations to the 5x5 program. The one I would recommend you research is the "Rippetoe" version. It is an excellent program and I, and many others have experienced excellent results with the program.
Good luck,
Ray

Answer:

I am currently on the 5x5 program. It is very good for gaining strength.

Answer:

What is a 5x5 program?Raven

Answer:

I have seen it as a couple of different names.
One is the Rippetoe 5X5 program and the other is the Bill Starr 5X5.
Here is a website that will tell you all about the program.

Answer:

Thank you.

Answer:

I've run the Starr\Pendlay\Madcow 5x5 quite a few times over the past two or three years. You might even say I'm addicted to it, LOL. I like it for a few reasons. First, it's simple. Second, it get me in and out of the gym quickly. Third, it has given me results I had never imagined in both strength and size.
It's also my favorite when I"m "cutting" so to speak. I seem to be able to maintain strength, or even increase it, while living on even zero carbs. :D

Answer:

I used to be a 5 day a week guy, each body part once a week. I switched to bill starr's 5x5 intermediate(journal in signature).
In the 4th week I benched 310 for the first time ever. My deads, squats, mil and incline are all going up. I'm only in week 6, but if you work the program the gains are phenomenal.

Outstanding thread on Rippetoe's program:

I used this starting off, and loved it.
Very simple, and easy to measure progress.
While designed for beginners, I've seen people of all levels use it with success.

Answer:

Thank You
I want to thank everyone for their thoughts. I never would have thought it would generate this much discussion. I hope the thread keeps going and helps people out.
Once again, thank you from a Soldier in Iraq.

Answer:

Billy, you'll find the madcow 5X5 to seem ridiculously easy for the first 4 weeks if you follow the spreadsheet. That's nothing but a deload period. Once you start setting PRs, the program can get brutal.
Rippetoe's Starting Strength is a 3X5 program designed for novices. It gets brutal also.

Answer:

I might try this next. I am due for a new cycle in about 7 weeks.

Answer:

I've gone that route many times in the past decades, I gained good weight and much more streangth..but being a natural ecto it gave me nagging little injuries. I seriously think it's better for the "naturaly" big young lifters. As you get older it will take it's toll.

Answer:

I have to agree with Capt America. I went on the Bill Starr 5x5 program for 12 weeks with great results but I developed some serious shoulder/chest pain. I switched up my program back to working one body part, once a week, to give my chest a rest but it still naggs and hinders me from putting up extra weight.

Answer:

A good, solid program for us mere mortals.
Now what I did (looking at my logbook which I now realize is written in a foreign language using a crayon) was 2 full-body 5x5 routines a week using different exercises within the week for the target muscle group.
Here's the routines (and they did build muscle):
Monday:
Lat Pull Down
Incline Bench
Squat
Side Lat Raises
Seated Calf
Close-grip Bench
Alt DB Curls
Crunch and back extensions
Stiff-leg Dead Lifts
Thursday:
Seated Cable Row
Flat Bench Press
Leg Extension
Upright Row
Leg Curl
Preacher Curl
Standing Calf
Bar Dips
Leg Raises and back extensions.
The order is a bit messed up but I don't feel like editing it :-(
Also, this is not my invention. As I recall I found it on this site so kudos to the original author.

Answer:

I have Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength (and Practical Programming) Books. I am currently doing his 3 x 5 program. I do not recall reading that Rippetoe has a 5 x 5 program, just Bill Starr does.
Both Rippetoe books are extremely well written and would DEFINITELY help novice thru experienced lifters. Lots of good basic lift information on how to correctly lift the weight.
Check out the reviews on Amazon, pretty impressive!

Answer:

1 week down
Completed the first week of the program and I was surprised by the outcome of the week. I don't see much in the way of body improvement, yet. But I sure feel it. Firday is a big day for the Starr program took me and my lifting partner almost an hour and a half.
