I bought an Weider set of weights (iron) from Canadian Tire when I was in grade 12. I worked out in the basement using a bench I made from a piece of plywood and some screw-in furniture legs. (Now I'm starting to sound like the Monty Python Four Yorkshiremen skit.)

AHHHHHHHHHH, the good old days,I use to hold my dad`s heavy bag in my arms to squat with.

Answer:

Yeah now that I think of it my first set of weights were sand. I think my Dad bought them at Kmart. Good times :)

Answer:

yep
Grey Kmart sand or concrete weights.
I finally got a 2nd set. It was funny, one set came with a heavy solid bar. The second set came with a longer hollow bar that weighed nothing, lol. So I liked to use the hollow bar so I could put more plates on it to look cool.
And one set of the weights was probably fairly accurate. The other set was OBVIOUSLY overstuffed because the plates were all bulging out etc

Answer:

Those sand weights were the real thing. Until then, ie from about "51" until then, all I had were the homemades my dad did for me. He took old broomsticks put some nails in the ends and then set them in different sizes of old paint cans. My brothers and I thought they were great.
