Question:
Q about Cholesterol Testing
I'm off to the docs tomorrow for a routine appointment but I'm planning on asking for bood tests so I can find out my HDL, LDL and triglyceride levels.
I know lots of you have had this done and I wondered if it was necessary to fast for a period of time before having the blood taken. I don't want to get there only to find he can't do it because I ate breakfast or something.
Thanks in advance :)
No fasting for Chol

Must fast for Trig

Whenever I've had my cholesterol tested I've always been told to fast for 12 hours before the blood is drawn.

Thanks in advance :) Eat fish for supper tonight. Last year I had roast tongue the night before my blood tests and my cholesterol showed a spike over the previous year.
Thanks guys.
I think I'm in for a fast so I can get the triglyceride test done as well. Hmmm, nothing but water from 9.00pm onwards. I'm sure looking forward to that
I'm really hoping I can talk him into doing these tests. I'm sure I can persuade him on the basis that my Brother has an hereditary condition that means his tri's and cholesterol are whacked - his body can't control everything like healthy person. I've never had any symptoms but it'd be good to rule it out.
The real reason I want it doing is to have a benchmark to work with. I just started keto and hope to peruade him to test me again in maybe 2 months time. Not that I distrust keto but I'm one of those people who doesn't believe things unless I prove the for myself. Control freak is another way of putting it ;)
It must be different over there because Chol and Trig are measured everytime here in the US. Should be part of an annual Blood Test. Also, the poor Dr's here love rakin' cash by Rx'ing the Statins.

I don't want to get there only to find he can't do it because I ate breakfast or something. I've been under the care of a cardiologist for nearly 5 years - I always fast for at least 12 hours. To keep the discomfort to a minimum, I schedule my appt with him for first thing in the morning so that dinner the night before is my last meal.

Hopefully, you won't have the same problem as your brother! :)

Control freak is another way of putting it ;) Push the next test date 3 months from this one. I believe it takes that long for the numbers to stabilize for the HDL and LDL levels. Triglycerides move up and down at a much faster clip.
Hope this helps! :)
Trig - yeah its different here - no such thing as an annual check-up. The only things that I get called in for regularly are the usual women's things :)
Fitty - that's really helpful, thanks :)
My doc told me to fast and not do any activity prior to having the blood drawn. I went to workout one time before and my results came back higher, next time I went first thing in the morning with no food, activity, etc.. and it went down 25 points.

Thanks in advance :) My body makes cholesterol like its going out of style. I can sell you some if you need more. Yes, you are supposed to fast for 12 hours prior to your blood being taken.
Thanks everyone - been to the doc this morning and he said 'you'll have to come back as you need to fast for 12 hours .....'
I dunno if he was impressed or annoyed when I told him I knew, and I had, so he could do it now  He also asked what meds my brother is on and I didn't know, but just spoke to him and phoned it all through to the doc's surgery.
Results in 3-4 days :)
