WPO squat records and Jeff Lewis at USAPL Nationals
Question:

WPO squat records and Jeff Lewis at USAPL Nationals
People have been complaining about WPO squats for a while, and this pretty much concludes the debate as far as I'm concerned: Jeff Lewis has a 550 kg squat in WPO, yet squatted a mere 400 kg under USAPL/IPF rules at the Nationals recently. A freaking 150 kg weight difference.

Answer:

Answer:

I didnt know there was a debate? Besides ... you lift in a fed for a reason ... you like their rules so you lift in it ... you dont like their rules/judging ... lift in a different fed. Who cares as long as we're all training hard and moving iron ... I train because I enjoy it and love it ... I hope you do too

I hope you do too thats all well and good....but what buggars it up is when someone uses the term "world record"

Answer:

The difference is in the gear allowed. WPO is unlimited gear. Lifters often wear double ply briefs and a double suit on top, and longer knee wraps. USAPL is single ply and 2 meter knee wraps. Huge difference. On a lifter like that, probably enough to give that much difference in the lift. And you have to take into consideration that he MIGHT just have had a bad day, it happens sometimes.
Regardless, a "mere" 400kg is more than most of us will ever squat, so how about some credit for someone stepping up and going to a more restrictive fed to lift.

Answer:

how do you include "mere" and "400 kg" in the same sentence? :D

Answer:

very sarcastically? :-P

Answer:

how do you include "mere" and "400 kg" in the same sentence? :D considering he was world class in one fed and far below elite in another I think the term fits.. when you have multiple guys weighing 200 lbs under what you do squatting 100-120 lbs more.... well you get the idea...

Answer:

I really think its the training. Most of the guys in apf/wpo or any related fed seem to train westside style or using a variation of westside and rely on tons of gear. I trained at detroit barbell under clay brandenburg and John zemmin and all the guys there train using dare i say bullshit westside princibles maxing out constantly and using heavy gear the only time they get stronger is when they get better gear or get "better" in their current gear. Needless to say i never gained a ****ing pound on any of my lifts training there in the 4-5 months that i did. Only thing i did was set gear prs but my actual "strength" never changed. In the IPF/usapl most of those guys are training using a lot of russian type programs using minimal gear so when they set a pr you can pretty much be rest assured its not because of triple ply gear they just bought. Shit go to powerlifting watch and check the deadlift records the top 20 list is dominated by foreign IPF lifters. But the wpo owns squats and bench because of the gear.
Im not dissing louie and westside they promote a strength sport i love and the great thing is you choose where you compete but their waaay to gear orientented now and im tired of westside being preached like its the only way to train. It doesnt do shit for me. I added over 100lbs to my dead in about a year using a basic russian strength program. And using basic body-building splits. GO ahead and let me have it people but thats my opinion!!!!

Answer:

It's well known that the WPO allows high squats in comparison to most feds...those are the rules or how they are seen by the powers that be in the fed...ofcourse a IPF lift is more impressive, its lower oh and their bench presses are lock out in the IPF also.
They should never claim an ALL TIME world record..it should just be a world record for that fed. Drugs, gear and rule differences make all the difference. If you get back to the orgins of powerlifting both the WPO and the IPF are wrong.

Answer:

I have respect for equipped lifters, but i honestly do find it to be a bit of a farce, i also believe that its the equipped federations that ruin the sport because it confuses people.

Answer:

I don't get what the debate is. A WPO lift is less than an IPF squat at the same weight due to gear and depth differences. This difference is especially magnified in cross-fed lifters who have trained most of their life lifting one way versus another. Why do people seem surprised at the weight difference between the two?
