Question:
Headaches whilst lifting?
Recently i was dumbell pressing, all os a sudden i had a sharp pain go up the back of my neck, then into the back of my head, had a severe headache, then it wore off a bit but lasted till the next day. I have never had this and i have been lfting 1.5 years.
Anyone else experience this? i think its called an exertion headache.

Anyone else experience this? i think its called an exertion headache. Even though I'm still pretty much a beginner, I saw your post and thought I'd leave a reply. The same thing happened to me a couple of months back, and it would happen with pretty much any exercise I was doing. When it happened it always felt like I was gonna pass out, or throw up, and I'd always end up having to leave the gym basically just after I'd started. It would still hurt for the rest of the day. I went to see a doctor about it, and she said that it was most likely something like a trapped nerve, so she told me to lay off the weight for a couple of weeks. I did that, then went back and havn't had the same problem. Try taking it easy for a week or two, and see what happens- or if you're concerned about it, go and see a doctor, and get their advice too. Another thing to consider might be your breathing technique.
yea i been to see the doctor, she suggested it was a ruptured muscle fibre in my neck. So i havent really touched the weights this week, However yesterday i was getting down with my girlfreind, and i experienced the same headache, just not as intense :-/
I've been there. For me it was a pinched nerve in my neck and anything that raised my blood pressure gave me a migrain. I took it easy for 2 weeks and was fine.
IS there no real solution? can i still exercise? but just not as intense?
IS there no real solution? can i still exercise? but just not as intense? I had it really bad once. It was a really hot day back in april time (strange.. yes) The aircon broke in the gym and was really stuffy lots of people on treadmills etc.
I left after 30 minutes because vision was going.
I think the best thing to do is to drink a lot so youre not dehydrated. Works for me
Im talking like a severe headache. It makes me cripple in pain, dizzy. Cannot do anything for like 5 minutes.
watch your blood pressure, i used to get them all the time when i was 140/95...let alone when i worked out it was prob much higher
Im talking like a severe headache. It makes me cripple in pain, dizzy. Cannot do anything for like 5 minutes. Same thing happened to me when i first started lifting. Don't old your breath while during a set, it causes your blood pressure to skyrocket and can cause a headache because not enough oxygen is getting to your brain.
not to get off the topic but my friends and i were seeing you could swim the length of the pool we were in underwater. i did but when i came up i got a bad headache. it quickly went away but i felt it coming on this week in the gym doing squats and presses. any ideas.

The thing i i have been lifting a while, and i was doing a weight i was comfortable with, howver i was straining, as i was almost failing, but was trying to get that last rep.
That used to happen to me every once in a while. I just concentrated on breathing right and not holding my breath, and it went away. Try that. If it persists, I'd see a doctor.
i just went on the punch bag / did a bit of skipping, and the headache started again. Seems like whenever i get my heartbeat going a bit faster than usual. Its so depressing not being able to do anything.

thats what the docotr did, checked my blood pressure, and it was fine.
I had the exact same prob. just take it easy. there really is no solution (that I know of) except for relaxing and letting your body take care of things itself.
The thing i i have been lifting a while, and i was doing a weight i was comfortable with, howver i was straining, as i was almost failing, but was trying to get that last rep. The SAME exact thing happened to me. I was doing deadlifts and on my last rep, I felt like I pulled something in the back of my head. It was my breathing pattern. I was holding my breath too long on deadlifts to the point where all the blood rushed to my head. I had a headache for a few days and felt really dizzy. I still feel it a little when I am doing deads but I feel fine afterwards.
Had this happened to me about a week ago. It's your breathing. For the dumbell press, try to inhale when you go down and exhale when you go up each time. I tend to forget that sometimes when I do heavier weights. :(
yea sounds like an exertion headache to me. i used to get them all the time when i started because i wasnt breathing properly
