What's the best cardio for my off days while bulking?
Question:

What's the best cardio for my off days while bulking?
Im bulking, and on rippletoes, and the guy said not to do HIIT, but I was wondering what would be the best thing to do on my off days so I dont get too fat? How long?
Also, whats the point of doing cardio when bulking? From what I understand, cardio burns calories, and not directly fat. Am I wrong?

Also, whats the point of doing cardio when bulking? From what I understand, cardio burns calories, and not directly fat. Am I wrong? Cardio helps burn fat at a given heart rate. Generally it is somewhere around the 170 bpm mark for the average person but can swing either way depending on body weight, height, muscle volume, etc. So cardio is ESSENTIAL to any bulking routine to keep the fat from accumulating. You are effectively eating a calorie surplus on a bulk each day - the surplus being stored as body fat. The cardio rids the body of the 'older body fat' so your bf% stays relatively the same.
HIIT is not recommended as it promotes the break down of muscle tissue. On your off days, just rest it up...maybe do a little cardio like 10 minutes or so of solid boxing (and I mean solid). You want to recover as much as possible for your next lifting day.

Answer:

I dont have a punching bag, so what should I do instead?

Answer:

I dont have a punching bag, so what should I do instead? Shadow boxing is an alternative although if you don't manage the force that your punching at you can seriously hurt your elbows joints. Going for a brisk walk is also good (30 - 60 minutes). Some light cycling around your suburb is another thing. Just be imaginative. There isn't really much cardio you can do that will hurt your gains. I'd stop worrying about it. I eat a calorie deficit, my routine is a 'bulking style' routine, I take no supplements or steriods and still manage to either maintain or build muscle while burning body fat.

Answer:

Fat burn
Well your Fat burn mode or fat burn zone is (220-age)*.65 = FBZ
so a heart rate of 133-135 would put you in the zone the best thing to do is the Elliptical for 30-40 minutes at that HR.

Thanks for your help It's a moderate jog, I guess.

Answer:

If you don't have access to a heart rate monitor while you do cardio... a good rule of thumb is to make sure you can still carry on a normal conversation without huffing and puffing. This will make sure your intensity doesn't go too high and your heart rate stays between 65 and 70 percent of your max heart rate.

Answer:

Ok, so which type of cardio should I do and for how long? And between 65 and 70 heartrate is fat burning mode?

HIIT has been proven far more effective in fat burning and overall health because most fat is burned AFTER the exercise.

Answer:

I just read someone say HIIT burns muscle. I've read so much stating the contrary, that it is best for preserving muscle. Can someone confirm?

I just read someone say HIIT burns muscle. I've read so much stating the contrary, that it is best for preserving muscle. Can someone confirm? Any cardio exercise will burn muscles if you don't eat / exercise right...

Answer:

Ok, so which type of cardio should I do and for how long? And between 65 and 70 heartrate is fat burning mode? You burn less overall calories than higher intensities, but 80% of the calories burned are from fat. This allows you to burn fat without burning too much muscle.
Good luck.

Answer:

Guys, but I still need to know what type of cardio lol

jogging, running, sprinting? I only have a street to do it on. Brisk walk to warm up, stretch, then a moderate jog.

Answer:

I would do HIIT on my off days. Warm up for a few minutes with a fast paced walk. From there go to a moderate jog (past a slow jog, but don't sprint) for a few minutes and then sprint all out for one minute. Get back to your moderate jog. Repeat. Works for me.
