Kinda random.. Tommy Kono lives up the street
Question:

Kinda random.. Tommy Kono lives up the street
so yeah, this is random but i thought if any section would appreciate this, it would be this one. but Tommy Kono lives up the street and i got to meet him yesterday. He's a really nice guy and we talked for a bit about training and whatnot. He's very knowledgeable (well duh.) about the iron game, and even though i train more pl style, he had useful advice.. mostly about recovery time.

Answer:

It'd be sweet if you could get some coaching from him!

Answer:

I'm hoping to meet him at the Kono Open next month in Sacremento. I use Kono approved training. 3 times a week under 2 hrs each.

Answer:

Are you sure it just wasn't an asian guy who lifted weights?

Answer:

if i did oly lifts i would have asked him if he could coach me, but i don't. :(
Are you sure it just wasn't an asian guy who lifted weights? (serious)?

Answer:

I would still ask him. He pressed 350 overhead (strict) following a textbook clean at 183, and squatted a 360 for 20 at about 165, so in addition to the OL's, he knows a bit about training to get strong.
He even entered a BB comp once or twice.
By the way, I am insanely jealous. Kono is my all-time lifting hero.

Answer:

If I was not an idiot I would know how to format that correctly so someone could read it. Took me two tries just to screw it up that badly.

Answer:

I figured it out. Thanks.

Answer:

I have gotten coaching from Tommy, just wanted to say.

Answer:

I have gotten coaching from Tommy, just wanted to say. When I grow up I want to be just like you.
:)
Details, dammit, details.

Answer:

I was lifting at golds in honolulu and I saw a guy doing O lifts and I wanted to learn, so he gave me the card to the guy who runs team hawaii. called him up and he gave me Tommys number I called him and met him at YMCA. Spent about a month learning how to squat right then I started doing pulls on my own. Tommy saw me and told me 2 things and the next thing I know the weight was flying over my head. Great guy lots of storys of the good ole days. My work schedual keeps me from making it down to train with him more, but I am going to be able to get one day a week in with him now. have you guys read his book?

Answer:

Of course I have read it. Lots and lots. One of the most annoying things about moving is I still have not found the box that contains it. If I do not by the end of the week, I will probably buy another.
If you live near him, and your job is getting in the way of him coaching you, you obviously need two things:
1. A new job
2. The ability to prioritize.
:)
I competed at a meet once that he showed up at. He was recognized (no surprise there) and asked to speak. I will never forget it. He was incredible friendly, and even more patient. I can not even imagine how many times he has been asked the same questions over the decades, but he always takes the time to answer.
