Question:
I was very surprised at (and not unhappy about) something I heard yesterday.
I was at Men's Wearhouse yesterday (again  ). My partner was having a crisis over his choice of suit, tie and shirt for our upcoming civil union ceremony. The sales associates are beyond helpful. Of course, by the time we got home he had forgotten everything our sales associate told him, and had me screaming at him over a tie "Tu no oyes, pu?eta! Usa lo que quieres!" (You don't listen, dammit! Wear whatever you want!" since apparently my English is incomprehensible). Damn this bipolar. :(
Anyway (composing myself :o)...
I was talking to one sales associate of 30 years in the business, who never uses a tape measure. He eyeballs his customers to fit them. And it works. He eyeballed me and told me my size, even though he's never waited on or fitted me before. We talked about fitness and losing weight. I said I had a good 3-4" to go. He said "No!"... not go below a 38 waist. I'm curently in size 40 pants, which are becoming annoyingly loose (and I love it :D). He says losing more than that, for my build would entail losing too much. So, just two more inches to go. And I think he's right... I seem to have lost (much of) my insulin resistance belly. That is, the protrusion is markedly less: my midsection is almost flat and I can see a 4 pack. I have mostly sub-q fat below my navel that needs to go. I can do this. :D
Yay! Congrats to you Frank! :)
LOL @ your partner. So, did he end up buying an outfit that looks good?
Yay! Congrats to you Frank! :) Thanks Hibs. :)
Have you ever posted a picture of you partner? It took me forever to get my wife to become a member (she posts sometimes but she is well below the 35 and over group :))
Lets get a pic so we can see the lucky man that made an honest man of you No, I haven't put up a pic of us. But if he has his way there will be a whole album. I'm sure I'll have one or two decent pics to share.
congrats to you - he doesn't want you to lose anymore weight because you will be harder to fit! I think you are right... more work for them to do tailoring.
Wow, you can shout and get testy in 2 languages!
I'm sure once the fittings and stuff are done you'll both look fabulous. I hope you have a wonderful day ... tell us more ..... flowers, gift list, party :D Actually I can curse in Greek, Russian, Urdu (Pakistani), Portuguese: one curse in each; and Spanish and Italian (probably the best in my repetoire). :D
Congrats Frank!!! I can curse you in 7 languages, get food and umm, female companionship, lol!! Yea, I know, NO HETERO!! :D
Thanks Rob. :)
I don't mean to be raining on anyone's parade or success, however, if you are 5'5" and 213 lbs as your bodyspace states, a 38" waist is still ample.
I question what this "sales associate" (Men's Warehouse explains it), knows about fitness when telling you not to go below a 38" waist.
Congrats to you on your progress. Thanks.
Yeah, I understand what you're saying. But for waist size consider that muscle takes up a lot of the space. I've got a "fireplug" build... short and broad. My shoulders measure 52" circumference. My hips are pretty widely spaced. So that's why I'll probably never get to a 32-34 waist without going back to how I looked in my 1994 pic.
So when is the big day? My partner and I attended our neighbors' CU ceremony (at Kirkpatrick Chapel at RU - nice location) a week ago and it was very moving. It got us thinking about whether we should hold out for the M word or just go ahead now. In any event, congratulations and much happiness to you both. Thanks Alex.
It's on Tuesday the 14th, at the municipal court in front of the judge. I took the whole week off for vacation. We may go away for a day or two.
If you go ahead with the c/u, you're pretty much covered in all legal aspects wrt inheritance and all spousal privileges under NJ state law. In fact, there is only one application for marriage and c/u licenses. If you've been together any length of time it behooves you to protect yourselves.
Big congrats on both the measurements and the CU.
I'd take an "ample" 38-inch waist without complaint. I got some more work to do...
Thanks. :)
Good news. Tailors always can spot when a gym-nut walks in. But they usually fear having to do too much to an off-the-rack suit to fit us. I bought a tux recently and to get the chest right the pants were a 38. They had to bring the pants down to 33 and still taper the jacket.
Oh, and why not visit Toronto where you can get married?
Yeah Joel, absolutely right.
The sales guy told me why they fit the jacket first, then do the pants...
The jacket has many seams that would have to be let out, taken in, etc. Tapering is one thing, but having to release the arm holes is another and rather labor intensive. The pants, on the other hand, have one seam. It is much easier to recut the pants, if that much needs to be done.
So... get the jacket to fit in the shoulders, arms and chest, not worrying about the size you wear, then have the pants altered.
As for the Toronto wedding... it's not recognized by the US government. And in NJ c/u are basically marriage without the name. People who went to Massachusetts or Canada to get married are finding that their marriages are null and void here. :( Pres. Clinton signed that little piece of shit legislation called DOMA: Defense of Marriage Act, wherein neither the federal government nor state governments have to recognize non-traditional (read hetero) marriages. He kow-towed to the conservatives.
