Can't seem to..
Question:

Can't seem to..
get the "balls" to go to the gym by myself. Anyone have any way for me to get over this? Also I'm too nervous to go outside and run too. I don't understand why I'm so nervous :(

Answer:

What is making you so nervous? Is it a lack of experience using the equipment, or just being alone in an unfamiliar atmosphere? I was nervous at first too when I had never been to a gym before, sometimes its just the wrong gym for you, thats what it was for me. Just a really uncomfortable atmosphere for a beginner, when my contract was up I went looking for a different one and have done soo much better since picking out a different one. Why not grab a friend to go with you, usually its only about $10-20 to bring a guest for the day. There are gyms out there too that cater to that with trainers that will take you through a circuit for free, if your a member.

Answer:

Just go by yourself, if you work out long enough you'll probably burn through 5-10 workout partners like I have.

Answer:

If it's safe in your area, why not try a night jog. After that, you'll see that people won't be staring at you or making you feel weird. I always applaud (inwardly lol) people I see exercising in public!

Answer:

I think I'm just going to call my gym, and see if when I go in, if I can have one of the trainers give me a tour.

Answer:

I remember being in the same situation....I was so afraid to go to the gym and it was so intimidating....so I would take a deep breath and go in..and once I was inside I would be o.k. After a while I got fed up and just told myself..that I was paying for my gym membership and that I had just as much right to be there as anyone else...and I would go in with the I don't care about anyone I'm just here to work out attittude..and it was great.....I was intimidated when I first started working out because I often heard men say,"she's just taking up space in OUR section"...LOL...that was hilarious....these men thinking they owned the gym...or the weight section for that matter...ahhaha...I just laughed away.....some people do have this stupid mentality that women should not be in "their" section...hahaha....such feeble minds.....now no one bothers me...but that is because I work out at 3 a.m.....lol...there are only 2 other people in the gym and I love that!
Just try to go with a friend first or take a class (if they offer them..spin, boxing etc...) that is how I met a lot of the people I know at the gym..........and I know it's hard.....but don't let people stand in the way of your fitness!!!!!! Also, be careful when running outside...having been a runner since high school I loved the outdoors..I would always go by myself and I had no fear...I would carry a special running blade( it is a small blade that goes around your neck..comes with a chain and the blade is covered..has a small handle so that you can retrieve it quickly)..that is why I would feel safe and pepper spray as well..........but it wasn't until a few months ago that I decided to go without these items because I had already arrived at the park(mountains) and I forgot my items....well BIG mistake....mid way into the trail I see a mountain LION jump onto my running path from the side mountain(500 feet in front of me)....this mountain lion was soooo big....it was huge!!!!! I stopped dead in my tracks and it started to trot towards me.......anyway.....after that I refuse to go trail running....

Answer:

I was really nervous too, it happens a lot to people. Best thing to do is learn more, then you will at worst know what you are doing. :D

Answer:

get the "balls" to go to the gym by myself. Anyone have any way for me to get over this? Also I'm too nervous to go outside and run too. I don't understand why I'm so nervous :( How about the first week or two, you go to the gym and just do cardio? Maybe hop on a life cycle, stair stepper, or treadmill for 20 minutes at first then increase the time. The cardio stuff is out of the way and it may help you get used to the surroundings and observe the regulars without getting in their way. Then gradually phase in the resistance training. That may help you get used to the gym and the people that go there without feeling like you're getting in the way. The vast majority of the people will be there for the same reason as you and let that be your motivation while you're there.
Being surrounded by people with similar goals always keeps me motivated and instills the desire to constantly improve.

I don't understand why I'm so nervous :( I know exactly how you feel! Give it a few times and if you are anything like me, you will find out that you would much rather work out by yourself than with others!
When I first started a few weeks ago I always wanted someone to work out with me, but now I feel like gym time is "my alone" time! Nothing better than throwing on the Ipod and pushing myself nice and hard!

Answer:

You live really close to me what gym do you go to?

Answer:

When I first started a few weeks ago I always wanted someone to work out with me, but now I feel like gym time is "my alone" time! Nothing better than throwing on the Ipod and pushing myself nice and hard! I agree. I love getting into it by myself, no distraction and constant chatter! ha ha

Answer:

I found that if I listen to my mp3 or radio(talk radio for me)that I am less self-concious and I am less aware of the people around me.Also its easy to think that the people in the gym have been working out and fit there whole life, not true we all start somewhere. When I see someone new in the gym I think back to 6 years ago when I was 165lb and did not even what half of the machines at the gym were for.
