Question:
Hill Sprints
Just wondering what you ladies think about these and if I should add these in maybe once a week or more. Here's where I'm at...9.5 weeks out from my very first bb contest. I am losing with what I'm doing now but feel I need something more. My workouts now consist of:
AM Lifting and PM cardio (right now I can't switch these up - but can in a few weeks). I usually do at least 20 mins on the Stepmill after the am lift and then at lunch do some other HIIT session for 20 mins.
So Im wondering if adding some hill sprints in instead of some of the HIIT would be good. My legs are what need to lean out now especially the back side - yuck! Feel free to comment and I have a bodyblog that I list my workouts in if needed. I would love to have some input - thanks!
I think incorporating any kind of sprints (hill, track, treadmill, stairs) into your workout will be very beneficial in really firming up the glutes, hams and quads. Plyos are also good for this and I know bodybuilders who swear by the Stepmill...so maybe just up your time and frequency on this. Not sure if it's true but someone told me that the Stepmill is all Monica Brant does for cardio several weeks out from her contests.
Thanks!
I guess I will "step" it up on the stepmill and start some sprint sessions - I really feel like the stepmill helps my legs. Right now the HIIT sessions have been either on the eliptical or the bike - so I think I will replace one of the eliptical sessions with a sprint session and see how that goes.
Hill sprints?! You are insane. I love it. :)
I've never prepped for a contest before but from what I've heard/read/seen :-P, I agree with SunnyD that it could be awesome for you.
Tell us how it goes!
Ha Ha
OK I tried these last night and lets just say I can see how these will work - whew! Yes sometimes it takes insanity - but deep down I love it too!

And absolutely awesome avatar!
We used to do tons of sprints and plyos during dryland training for hockey in university...I would notice a difference in my legs in just a week...
Does it also help with calf development?
good 'ol hill sprinting :D. i used to do these in college. very exhausting. almost as great of a workout as running suicides on a basketball court. it will definitely burn a lot of calories
Does it also help with calf development? yes it does. it pretty much develops your entire posterier chain

There's the old saying "do what you've always done and you'll get what you've always gotten."
I say switch it up...keep your body "on it's toes" and it will respond better.
So I just did these tonight on the treadmill doing HIIT, and was so pooped that I felt overheated, and almost at the point of vomitting after I drank about 3/4th's of my protein shake. Then again, it's been awhile since I've done this.
I was so hot that I just wanted to lay on a giant block of ice in a fetal position while feeling sorry for myself.
Thanks - aint it fun?
I just saw this thread resurfaced. Thanks for all the replies.
Aren't these fun Stella? It's actually been to hot to do these outside here 100+ and the air quality aint so good in the ATL so I am resorting to the treadmill too. I am noticing a difference and think it was just what I needed to go along with that stephelly thingy!
Thanks for the avi comment Mrs_Muscles!
Aren't these fun Stella? No!
Ahah, just kidding. They were alright, but I haven't done these in awhile so I was drenched in sweat and had some long-ass rest periods in between sprints (like 2-3 minutes at least because of how freakin' tired I was). After each sprint, I felt like I had a brick on my chest and had a bit of a hard time catching my breath. Could this be because I'm not into that great of cardio shape, and I should get used to this after time?
I was also expecting to at least feel SOME soreness (I was running on the steepest incline the treadmill could do [about 15] and sprinting on the balls of my feet).
No!
