Probiotics?
Question:

Probiotics?
Anyone taken them? Results good/bad? Any particular brand or type?
Background: After just coming off a round of antibiotics (ear infection), I've had acid indigestion, GERD, etc almost non-stop (never had it before chronically). I'm thinking it's the antibiotics that "killed" all the good bacteria in my stomach. Hence......
Although Mylanta works fine, I'm hesitant to take it daily. Seems like it turns into a never ending cycle of drinking that s**t over time.
Thoughts? Am I just "old"?.......:(

Answer:

I had a similar thing when I was on IV Antibiotics that probably killed all the flora in my gut, good and bad. I used it for about 2 weeks, found that it eventually made my stomach upset so I stopped and everything went back to normal after that. I probably overloaded my system.

Thoughts? Am I just "old"?.......:( I prefer Kyodophilius by Kyolic because the probiotics used were actually cloned from humans' intestines rather than from yeast or other derivatives making them more compatible and utilizable. In addition they do not require refrigeration as do many other products and they retain the stated amounts of probiotics as retained on their label, a claim many other companies cannot support.

A cup of yogurt should do the same for you.

Answer:

A cup of yogurt should do the same for you. Exactly. Or cultured cottage cheese.

Answer:

Exactly. Or cultured cottage cheese. Yep, been eating yogurt everyday for 3 days now. Slooooowly helping. I seem to be slightly better today (without taking the antacids....which was my goal).
I'm still going to try supplemental probiotics too. I may stop by the "Vitamin Shoppe" (chain here in houston). I know they carry the "NOW" brand along with others. It couldn't hurt for a fews days/weeks to give it a try.

Answer:

I saw something recently that was saying that yogurt actually has a fairly low amount of bacteria in it these days. I didnt read much on it as a supplement probiotics and dont eat yogurt.....but if your relying on yogurt for this bacteria then maybe its something you should search for.
Either way, I highly doubt yogurt has the amount of bacteria that some sups do.

http://www.consumerlab.com/results/probiotics.asp Bump to that - I've been on long term antibiotic treatment (2 months) and have been using Enzymatic Pearls daily along with 1/2 - one cup of greek yogurt. No stomach or instestinal issues at all.
As further insurance, I also use about 6 ozs. of pure, unfiltered, unsweetened cranberry juice from Lakewood. It's pretty tart so usually mix it with at least 8 ozs water or with other juice. Straight it's nearly undrinkable.
By the way, cranberry juice is also a great preventative and complementary treatment for yeast infections especially among women.

I have to add that if you're taking antibiotics and probiotics then they should be taken at different times during the day,not together.

Eat a yogurt that has multiple types of cultures (many just have one). Stonyfield Farms is great and has 6 types of cultures.

Eat a yogurt that has multiple types of cultures (many just have one). Stonyfield Farms is great and has 6 types of cultures. At what quantity though?

Answer:

Buy any organic natural yoghurt.
Bring some milk almost to the boil to kill any bacteria. Allow to cool to bodyheat. You don't need a thermometer. You can cradle the pot in your hands, you'll know the temperature's right.
Add a few spoonfulls of the natural yoghurt.
Put the pot in a warming cubbard /hot press or near a warm stove or on a warming plate you can buy for making beer.
Next morning, enjoy your own home-made yoghurt. You can chop lots of fruit into it.
Do not add sugar, 'less you want to do more harm than good.
You can use some left after a few days, to start the process over. Eventually you will have to buy another pot of yoghurt of course.
