Working out alone?
Question:

Working out alone?
This is my first post on this site I have been lurking and reading for a week or so and learning quite a bit.
I'm 18 years old & want to start working out although I never have before.. The problem is all my friends are already away at college or starting football and work out with there team.
So, there is my problem.. I don't have anyone to work out with & I have never worked out before and have no clue how to use the equipment and don't know the correct form for anything.
I don't want to pay for a gym membership and show up and have no clue on how to do anything and just leave. And I don't have room in my apartment for any equipment to work out at home. So, I'm in a tough spot.
What should I do? Any Advice?

Answer:

everything you need is here sometimes gyms will have free sessions with a trainer or a intern that you can teach you machines and thing like that.
i workout alone and i do fine. you don't really need a spotter unless you are trying to figure out maxes

Answer:

well for starters, heres a list of all muscle groups and what exercises do what.
you'll find that 70% of people also work out alone, but without equiptment or being able to go gym, the only muscle building workouts your going to be able to do are bodyweight (which will make muscle building progress very slow)
chest - wide gripped press up
back - wide gripped pull ups
biceps - close gripped chin ups
triceps - dips
legs - bodyweight squats
if i were you id invest in a paid of dumbells & a bench, it doesn't take up that much room, my room is 20ft by 10ft, it has a double bed in it aswell, and i still make room.

Answer:

It's okay man, I workout alone, and basically just tought myself how to do it. Just get in the gym, start picking up the weights, and i dunno, you'll just figure out what to do. Just eat big, lift big, and sleep big.

Answer:

Most gyms will give you a free workout with a trainer that will show you proper form. Just tell him to go over the basic freeweight movements like squat, bench, deadlift. Back movements are easy and so are arm movements.

Answer:

Since you are a beginner, I would recommend rippetoes for you. That is a great basic lifting routine.
As for being new to the equipment, just ask a trainer or something, they will help you out. Working alone isnt a problem, just remember to ask people to spot you if you arent sure if you can lift the weight.

Also, the gym I am going to sign up for does not offer that trainer basic thing. I asked and they said I would have to pay for a lesson. At a ridiculous price, so that is kind of out of the question.
If I buy a bench & dum bells won't it take a while to see results? And won't I be better off at a gym?

Answer:

you dont need anyone to show you how to lift. Just go to google images and look at the form, go to a gym, and as best you can try to imitate the form with as light of weights as you need. Gradually it will increase,

Answer:

Nope I really didn't, just taught myself. You just gotta try stuff out. My dad and older brother bought a lot of gym equipment for our house, so I'm just lucky to be able to use it at home, but unless you wanna drop thousands on that you'd be much better off at a gym.

Answer:

Get someone to show you how to exercise properly. It isn't enough to just look at pics and vids you need someone there coaching you. Its pathetic to see guys who have been lifting for 10+ years doing things like side laterals wrong.

Answer:

if you type in the thing u want to do they will show u the proper form

Answer:

go to barns and noble and buy th gym bible teaches you every thing i looked at it its really nice with pics for each extra size.

Answer:

just suck it up go in and get the job done.
Life is to short to hold back. What diference does it make if you dont know all about the equipment there are tons of demonstrations on bb.com to show you how to use everything.
I like going to the gym alone i dont like people talking to me in the gym either. at least until im done or before i start.
read up on bb.com find yourself a routine and go have fun.

Answer:

i work out with a buddy most of the time because he needs a bit of help, but sometimes i like to relax at the gym i still lift and all that but it gives me ..me time lol a buddy can also be fun and a motivation to lift a bit harder
you should get a buddy if your benching, just in-case you do 1 too many, it might happen so being safe is a good idea
